Description
How2 - tools for self-help and support for young people How do you deal with it when you get angry, when tragic images keep coming back, when you cant sleep at night? Since 2015, low-threshold workshops have been offered in Tyrol for young refugees, in which they learn stress management in a group and discover and strengthen their resources. The basis for this offer is the START program (Stress - Trauma Symptoms - Arousal - Regulation - Treatment) by psychologists Andrea Dixius and Eva Möhler. It has been further developed in Tyrol in recent years by experienced trainers and is now being continued under the name How2. It helps to give young people a tool with which they can help themselves to deal with unpleasant feelings in everyday life. Learning specific skills such as relaxation techniques can lead to a rapid reduction in acute symptoms, among other things. It serves to prevent and stabilize acute emotional crises. These workshops are offered as part of existing educational programs. The cooperation with the Tyrol adult education center, the Tafie association and Pitanga has proven successful. Objective The aim is to provide concrete support to stressed young people with concrete tools. How2 teaches concrete skills such as the concept of mindfulness, relaxation techniques and positive thoughts in order to bring about and promote stress and emotion regulation, experience of self-efficacy, promote resilience, and reduce harm to others and to oneself. Background Young people who experience violence or instability are confronted with many challenging feelings in everyday life. The Corona pandemic has significantly worsened the situation of children and young people and, as we know from many studies, the pandemic has had a strong impact on the mental health of children and young people. Isolation and limited contact options have hit the younger people in society particularly hard. We focus on young people and young adults with a history of flight or migration. Refugee children and young people are one of the marginalized groups in Austrian society and are affected by the pandemic to an even greater extent due to lack of or limited access to information and a lack of infrastructure. They experience loneliness and violence and are often left alone with their negative feelings, which can have a destructive effect. Therapy is too abstract and high-threshold for most young people and the free places are highly sought after. There are hardly any low-threshold psychosocial offers for the target group of young people. Together with our cooperation partners, we have been committed to the psychosocial care of young refugees for years. From our experience, we know that there is a need for sustainable offers. How2 is one such offer that uses simple means to reach young people who cannot and do not want to accept therapy. How2 uses the resource of peer experiences by allowing young people to learn from each other within the group. Training for professionals In order to create a holistic trauma-sensitive environment for young refugees, we also offer training for social and youth work professionals on the subject of flight and trauma. Depending on the training, different target groups are addressed: inpatient or outpatient setting, newcomers or experienced people. The evaluation of the 5 training courses from 2022 and 2023 has also shown that there is a high demand for explicit methods and tools training. For 2024-2025, in-depth workshops will therefore be offered in addition to the tried and tested training courses. Participants work together with the very experienced speaker to develop methods and tools adapted to their respective daily work. Please register for a training course or workshop at info@plattform-asyl.eu. The aim of this training is also to network colleagues with each other and to get to know each others work areas.
