Description
A parental separation or divorce is particularly painful for adolescents because they are often having their first experiences with relationships themselves and hold a romanticized view of love. That image is threatened by their parents splitting up. The most significant impact of a separation at this stage is the loss of the secure, supportive family structure that allows the adolescent to swing between detachment and independence and still childlike dependence. When the parental home collapses during this sensitive phase, which had previously provided a stable framework, adolescents become unsettled. The impending steps toward independence make them very vulnerable and in need of security. Their reactions are often very contradictory. They feel anger and disappointment about their parents separating and the associated loss of their family. Some feel guilty, others miss the parent who moved out and withdraw. Many feel insufficiently seen by their parents, who are preoccupied with themselves and have too little time and energy to be there for the adolescent. Cognitively they are able to understand why their parents decided to separate. However, this can sometimes lead to adolescents finding themselves in a role that overwhelms them — they become adult conversational partners for their parents, trying to help solve problems and at times acting as substitute partners. In a separation situation adolescents need parents who set reasonable boundaries but also grant them sufficient freedom. It is important to involve adolescents in all decisions. Because of their development, after the initial shock they are able to realistically assess the reasons for the separation/divorce and to reflect on their own position within the family. They are therefore willing and able to actively help shape future life in the post-divorce phase and to represent their interests. RAINBOWS offers groups specifically for adolescents after parental separation/divorce as well as workshops for schools and out-of-school youth centers.
